Malta’s Haul-Out Season:
Book the Yard and the Cover Together

5 min read

Yacht in a travel hoist ready to be lifted out

Every autumn the travel lifts at Manoel Island, Kalkara, Marsa and Marsaxlokk start working through their lists. Malta has only a handful of yards, so haul-out slots go early — and the owners who book the cover at the same time as the lift have the easiest winter.

How the season runs

Most boats in Malta that come out for the winter do so between late autumn and spring. The first boats out are usually the ones wanting a full antifouling cycle; the busiest weeks follow once the charter season has properly ended; and by spring the yards are busy putting everything back in.

There aren’t many yards on the islands, and the bigger lifts have limits on the size of boat they can handle. That means the slots that suit a particular boat — the right lift, the right week, space on the hard for as long as needed — can be booked up well before the season starts.

Why plan the cover with the lift

A boat on the hard is more exposed than one afloat. It sits higher, catches the wind across the yard and collects dust from the work going on around it. The best time to fit a cover is in the gap between the boat being blocked off and the first contractor arriving — which is easy to arrange if the cover is booked with the lift, and awkward if it isn’t.

Booking both together also means the cover can be designed around the winter’s work: stopping at the waterline for antifouling, doors where the engineer needs access, or a containment enclosure if there’s sanding or spraying planned.

What to tell the yard and the cover fitter

Your boat’s length, beam and weight; whether the rig is coming down; what work you have planned and who’s doing it; and when you want to be back in. Those few things let the yard pick the right lift and slot, and let us plan the frame, vents and doors around the work.

Checklist

Before you lift out

  1. Book the lift early

Speak to the yard as soon as you know your plans.

  2. Plan the winter’s work

Antifouling, engine, rigging, repairs — and who’s doing it.

  3. Book the cover with it

So it goes on the day she’s blocked off.

  4. Set the relaunch date

So the cover comes off and the film goes before she goes back in.

Before we quote

We scan it first. Then the price doesn't move.

For lay-ups we survey once the boat is settled — on the hard or on her berth. We measure the vessel, work out the frame, the film area, the vents and the doors — and the number you get back is the number you pay. No provisional sums, no “subject to access”.

Got a lift booked at Kalkara for late November. Can you do the cover the same week?
Yes — we’ll fit once she’s blocked off, stop at the waterline for the antifoul, and put a door at the companionway.
Perfect, pencil us in.

Not every job needs a visit to get going. Send a couple of photos and tell us where she’s laid up, ashore or afloat, and when she goes back in, and an installer will tell you what’s involved — including when shrink wrap isn’t the right call.

  1. Photograph it

Whole item in frame, plus one close-up of the access side.

  2. Send it over

WhatsApp or email, with where she’s laid up, ashore or afloat, and when she goes back in.

  3. We come back to you

Approach, timescale and a price, in plain English.

Finished covers

What a proper cover looks like.

Framed, vented, welded into one skin and clear of the boat — the standard every cover is fitted to.

Questions

Common questions

When should I book a haul-out in Malta?

As early as you can once you know your plans. The yards are limited and popular weeks fill well ahead.

Can the cover go on the same day as the lift?

Usually the day she’s settled on the hard, before any trades arrive. Booking both together makes that easy.

Can work carry on under the cover?

Yes. Doors are fitted where trades need access, and the cover can stop at the waterline for antifouling.
