Yacht covers in Ta’ Xbiex

Ta’ Xbiex is where a lot of Malta’s yachts are managed from — agents, registries and owners who live elsewhere. We fit covers that let a yacht sit safely between visits, and that a manager can sign off without a site meeting.

Who looks after a yacht in Ta’ Xbiex when the owner isn’t here?

The Ta’ Xbiex waterfront is the administrative side of Maltese yachting. The Royal Malta Yacht Club sits on the seafront and runs the Rolex Middle Sea Race every October, the quay is lined with yachts larger than the Msida pontoons can take, and the streets behind it are full of yacht agents, management companies and Malta-flagged registrations for owners who are rarely on the island.

That last group is who this page is for. If you manage a yacht here, the brief is usually simple: keep the boat in the condition the owner left it, without daily attention, until they next fly in. A cover that is fitted once, photographed and left alone does a lot of that job — and it’s far easier to justify on an invoice than a season of re-varnishing.

The usual problems

What Ta’ Xbiex managers and owners usually ask for

“The owner won’t be back until next season”

A full cover, framed and vented, with a door for the crew or agent. Fitted once, photographed for the owner, left alone until they arrive.

“We only need the decks and furniture protected”

Not every yacht needs wrapping end to end. We can cover the sun deck, flybridge furniture, helm stations or tender separately, so the boat can still be used.

“The quay takes a beating in a north-easterly”

The outer berths feel the gregale swell. A cover that’s shrunk tight and banded to the hull has no loose panels to catch the wind while the yacht works on her lines.

The approach

Covers that suit a managed yacht

We quote in writing, with photos of the boat before and after, so the management company can forward it to the owner without translation. One point of contact, one invoice, and a removal date agreed up front so the cover is off before the owner’s flight lands.

On larger quay-berthed yachts we usually frame over the superstructure and leave the hull sides clear, which keeps the cover clear of fenders and lines. Where a yacht has to stay usable — for a broker viewing or a survey — we fit additional zipped panels so sections can be opened and closed again cleanly.

  • Quoted in writing for the owner
  • Photos before and after
  • Part covers for decks and furniture
  • Clear of fenders and mooring lines
  • Zipped panels for viewings and surveys
  • Removal date agreed up front

Before we quote

We scan it first. Then the price doesn't move.

On Ta’ Xbiex Quay we survey from the quayside and aboard, with the agent or crew. We measure the vessel, work out the frame, the film area, the vents and the doors — and the number you get back is the number you pay. No provisional sums, no “subject to access”.

Managing a 22 m on Ta’ Xbiex Quay. Owner’s away until April — can you cover her and send him photos?
We can. Superstructure only so she’s clear of the fenders and lines, with a zipped panel for viewings. Photos before and after go straight to the owner.
Good. Quote to me, I’ll forward it.

Not every Ta’ Xbiex job needs a visit to get going. Send a couple of photos and tell us the yacht’s name, berth on the quay and who holds the keys, and an installer will tell you what’s involved — including when shrink wrap isn’t the right call.

Whole item in frame, plus one close-up of the access side.

  2. Send it over

WhatsApp or email, with the yacht’s name, berth on the quay and who holds the keys.

Questions from Ta’ Xbiex

Shrink wrap in Ta’ Xbiex: common questions

Can you deal with our yacht agent rather than the owner?

Yes, and it’s often simpler. We can take the brief, survey and quote through the agent or management company, and send photos the owner can see directly.

Do you cover yachts after the Middle Sea Race?

We can cover any yacht coming off the racing calendar, whether she stays afloat in Ta’ Xbiex or hauls out across the creek on Manoel Island. Race boats often just need the deck, cockpit and hatches sealed for the winter.

Is a cover safe on a Ta’ Xbiex quay berth in a gregale?

A properly shrunk cover is tight to its frame and banded to the hull, so there’s nothing loose for the wind to get under. It won’t stop the yacht moving on her lines — that’s for the crew and the marina — but the cover itself won’t be the problem.

Can you cover just the tender and the sun deck?

Yes. Part covers are common on managed yachts. Tenders, jet skis, helm stations and outdoor furniture can all be wrapped separately.
